US strikes Iranian coast after Hormuz ship attack; Gulf states hit
What's new: Iran said the Strait of Hormuz is closed until further notice after a Cyprus-flagged ship caught fire and a crew member went missing.
The United States struck Iranian military boats and coastal targets after Iran attacked a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it ablaze and forcing its crew to abandon it. U.S. Central Command said the M/V GFS Galaxy suffered major engine room damage and that one civilian crew member is missing. Iranian state media said strikes hit Bandar Abbas, Qeshm island and Sirik. Iran then launched missiles and drones toward Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, with Qatar's military saying it intercepted incoming fire. The Revolutionary Guard said it had closed the strait to all ship traffic until further notice, deepening the threat to a waterway that had carried about a fifth of globally traded oil and gas before the war.
