US scrapped G20 photo in Atlanta after ministers shunned Lavrov
Why it matters: The clash exposed deep splits over Russia's war in Ukraine even as Washington tries to keep Moscow engaged.
The United States canceled the traditional group photo at a G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta after several delegations refused to appear alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dropped the session once it became clear the image would turn into a diplomatic dispute, US officials said. European ministers objected to sharing the stage with Lavrov because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband used the meeting to accuse Moscow of killing civilians and worsening global energy and food insecurity. Poland's foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, backed the cancellation, calling it the right decision.
