US sanctions 5 Cuban state firms tied to military-run GAESA

Why it matters: Companies that serve the targeted firms risk losing access to the US financial system, raising pressure on Cuba's import network.

The United States imposed sanctions Tuesday on five Cuban state entities, including three linked to Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A., or GAESA, the military-run conglomerate that analysts say dominates much of the island's economy. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Cuba's leadership of using GAESA to control resources, while Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez condemned the move. One of the sanctioned firms, Almacenes Universales S.A., is Cuba's main logistics and warehousing company and plays a central role in imports and exports. Analysts said the penalties could scare off foreign partners because anyone providing services to the entities could also face sanctions and be cut off from the US financial system.
