The United States revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador in Washington, escalating a diplomatic standoff between the two countries. A senior State Department official said the step came after Brazil withheld formal approval for President Donald Trump’s nominee for US ambassador, Daniel Perez, and denied visas to two US diplomats. The official said Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti was not being expelled and her visa could be restored if the impasse is resolved. Brazil rejected the US action, calling it based on false claims and saying its review of Perez was proceeding under diplomatic norms. Brasilia also defended its July refusal of visas to two State Department officials, arguing their planned trip sought to undermine confidence in Brazil’s electoral system ahead of the October presidential contest.
