US restores Iran shipping blockade as Hormuz fighting flares

What's new: Trump dropped a planned 20% cargo toll, but fresh US strikes and Iranian attacks kept the ceasefire from unraveling further.

The United States moved to restore a blockade on Iranian shipping Tuesday after new fighting in and around the Strait of Hormuz shattered an interim peace arrangement. President Donald Trump had floated a 20% fee on cargo using the waterway, but later said Gulf countries would instead invest in the United States. PBS, citing AP reporting, said US forces launched additional strikes on Iranian coastal defense, missile, drone and maritime targets ahead of the blockade's return. Iran also attacked shipping and US allies, according to the report. The renewed clash threatens a route that carried about one-fifth of traded crude oil and natural gas before the war and has already driven oil prices sharply higher.
