US presses Iran to keep Strait of Hormuz open after attack

The message was sent directly and through regional mediators as threats of further strikes grew if the nuclear dispute fails.

The United States pressed Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and stop attacks on commercial ships. Axios, citing US officials, reported the message was delivered on Saturday, both directly to Tehran and through regional mediators. The pressure came after US forces launched a series of strikes from Tuesday night into early Wednesday. CENTCOM described the operation as retaliation for Iran's actions against merchant vessels in the strategic waterway. Iran then said it attacked US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, and accused Washington of violating a memorandum of understanding on ending hostilities. Donald Trump also said the ceasefire with Iran was no longer in effect before the US carried out more strikes on Wednesday night.
