US orders DeepSeek removed from civilian agency IT systems
What's new: The Homeland Security move also blocks future purchases and third-party services built on DeepSeek models.
The US Department of Homeland Security ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products and services built on the Chinese company’s AI models from government IT systems, widening Washington’s crackdown on Chinese technology. A notice published Oct. 19 said agencies also cannot buy DeepSeek tools or third-party offerings developed with its models. DHS warned the software could expose sensitive data to the People’s Republic of China, generate intelligence on US personnel or agencies, and carry malware or other security flaws. The order took effect at the end of July and applies to civilian agencies such as Treasury, State and Justice, but not the Defense Department.
