US ordered Anthropic to block top AI models for foreign users

The US Commerce Department ordered Anthropic to stop giving foreign nationals access to its most advanced AI models without a license, escalating Washington’s direct intervention in the AI industry. In a June 12 letter to CEO Dario Amodei, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the company it must seek approval before any export, re-export or transfer of Fable 5 or Mythos 5 to any foreign person anywhere in the world. Anthropic then disabled both models and began talks with US officials. The company said it believes the move followed concerns that Fable 5 could be jailbroken to perform cybersecurity tasks, and argued the restriction was disproportionate.
