US military sets Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan for firing squad

What's next: Army rules require the execution to take place within 150 days of presidential approval, but not sooner than 60 days.

The Pentagon has moved to execute Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting, by firing squad after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the sentence and President Donald Trump approved it. Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 for killing 13 people and wounding 32 at the Texas base. The shooting remains the deadliest non-combat attack on a U.S. military installation. The Army has not set a date or location, though service rules call for an execution within 150 days of presidential approval and no earlier than 60 days. It would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first by firing squad since World War II.
