US midterms put House and Senate control up for grabs

Why it matters: A Democratic flip of either chamber could block Donald Trump’s agenda and open investigations into his administration.

Americans vote Nov. 3 in midterm elections that will determine which party controls Congress for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term. Democrats need a net gain of four seats in both the House and Senate to erase Republicans’ narrow 218-214 House edge and 53-47 Senate majority. They are widely expected to retake the House, while the Senate fight remains tighter and may hinge on races in Ohio, Iowa, Alaska, Texas, Michigan, Maine and possibly Kansas. Election officials have also warned that disputes over voter eligibility, ballot counting and certification could delay results in close contests.
