US judge throws out Gautam Adani bribery and fraud case

What's new: The dismissal ends a 2024 case tied to alleged bribes for an Indian solar project after prosecutors said it was hard to prove.

A federal judge in New York dismissed the US criminal case against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani after the Justice Department moved to abandon the prosecution. Judge Nicholas Garaufis approved the request on Aug. 10 after seeking more detail on why prosecutors wanted the case dropped and whether any agreement was tied to it. Adani had been charged in 2024 with taking part in a scheme to bribe Indian officials to secure approval for a solar energy plant and then misleading US investors about anti-corruption controls at Adani Group. Prosecutors said in a July 4 filing that the case was largely foreign, difficult to prove and outside current enforcement priorities. Adani denied wrongdoing and said he knew of no deal exchanging investment pledges for dismissal.
