US-Iran interim deal opens 60-day window for broader talks

Why it matters: The pause could shift focus at this week’s G7 summit toward Russia’s war in Ukraine.

A short-term agreement between the United States and Iran has opened a 60-day period for further negotiations, creating space for a broader diplomatic track between Washington and Tehran. On Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power: Late Edition” on June 15, Rep. Dina Titus said the arrangement showed the Trump administration could have pursued diplomacy earlier. Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olha Stefanishyna said the accord would let leaders focus more fully on Russia’s war in Ukraine at the G7 summit, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to meet President Donald Trump. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark argued the US should keep aircraft carrier groups in the Middle East during the negotiation period.
