US, Iran head to Swiss talks as Tehran moves to close Hormuz

What's next: Technical talks start Sunday in Switzerland as a 60-day interim deal strains over fighting in Lebanon.

U.S. and Iranian negotiators traveled to Switzerland on Saturday for talks on filling in the terms of an interim agreement meant to halt the war, after Tehran said it had closed the Strait of Hormuz and warned progress would be limited unless fighting in Lebanon stops. Vice President JD Vance said he was optimistic about movement on Iran’s nuclear program and a ceasefire in southern Lebanon. Iran’s delegation is led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Pakistan said it is mediating the talks, with Qatar also involved. The U.S. rejected Iran’s claim over Hormuz, with Central Command saying merchant traffic was still moving through the waterway.
