US, India End 2 Days of Trade Talks Without Interim Deal Clarity

Why it matters: A pact could protect Indian exporters from higher US tariffs and widen US access to a fast-growing market.

The United States and India wrapped up two days of trade talks on June 24 without indicating whether they had narrowed the gaps blocking an interim agreement. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal as the two sides reviewed market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience and non-tariff barriers. The negotiations come after President Donald Trump said at the Group of Seven summit in France that the countries were “very close” to a deal. The US is India’s second-largest trading partner and its biggest export market. India’s exports to the US rose to $87.3 billion in the year ended March, while imports climbed 17.2% to $53.48 billion.
