US imposes sanctions on 2 ICC officials in Netanyahu case

Tomoko Akane and Abdoulaye Seye are barred from entering the US and face limits on transactions through the American financial system.

The United States imposed sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane and senior lawyer Abdoulaye Seye on Tuesday, amid Washington's clash with the court over a case involving Israel. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused both of directly taking part in ICC efforts to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute officials from states that do not recognize the court's jurisdiction. The sanctions include a ban on entry to the US and restrictions on transactions through the American financial system. The ICC responded by saying the move undermines the rule of law. Tensions have risen since the ICC in 2024 issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
