US hits Iranian military sites after 3 tankers were struck in Hormuz

What's new: Washington also revoked Iran's oil sales license, a move that sent oil prices up more than 3%.

The US launched a new round of strikes on Iran on July 7 after three tankers were hit in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating pressure on a ceasefire already under strain. A US official said the strikes targeted Iranian air defense systems, coastal surveillance, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles and drone launch sites. Iranian media reported explosions in Sirik, Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas, and state TV said several people were injured by shrapnel at a commercial pier in Sirik. Washington also revoked a June 22 license that had allowed Iran to sell oil through Aug. 21, giving it until July 17 to wind down transactions. Qatar blamed Iran for striking the LNG tanker Al Rekayyat, while a Saudi-flagged tanker was also damaged off Oman.
