US hits Iran for 9th night as 3rd service member dies in conflict

Why it matters: Oil topped $90 a barrel as fighting around the Strait of Hormuz further disrupted shipping and widened regional risks.

The United States carried out another wave of strikes in Iran, extending its campaign to a ninth straight night after the military disclosed a third U.S. service member death since Friday. U.S. Central Command said the latest strikes targeted Iranian coastal surveillance, air defenses, missile and drone storage sites, and other maritime capabilities tied to the Strait of Hormuz. The military said the service member was killed in Iraq during the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone. Iran also kept up retaliatory attacks, firing toward Jordan, Syria, Kuwait and Bahrain, while reporting hits in several Iranian cities. The exchanges followed the collapse of a mid-June interim deal meant to calm fighting over the strategic waterway.
