US hits 140 targets in Iran after Strait of Hormuz ship attack

Why it matters: Iran answered with strikes on Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman, widening the risk to Gulf shipping and diplomacy.

The United States struck about 140 targets in Iran on Sunday and into Monday after an Iranian attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz set the vessel ablaze and left one crew member missing. US forces targeted missile and air defense systems, drone and missile launch sites, ammunition depots, communications equipment and Revolutionary Guard boats, according to the military. Iranian media reported blasts in Qeshm island, Bandar Abbas, Sirik and Hajiabad, while local officials said military sites were hit and no casualties were reported there. Tehran then attacked Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman, deepening a regional confrontation that has pushed US-Iran talks over the waterway toward collapse.
