US extends TPS reprieve for Ukrainians and Sudanese past Oct. 19

What's new: DHS left protections in place for roughly 102,800 people but gave no deadline for a final decision or clear guidance on work permits.

The Department of Homeland Security allowed Ukrainians and Sudanese covered by Temporary Protected Status to remain in the United States after their protections were due to expire on Oct. 19, offering a last-minute reprieve for about 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese. DHS said a formal determination would come "at the appropriate time" and that affected migrants would keep their protections in the meantime. The agency did not say how long the extension would last and did not clearly spell out the status of work permits. TPS lets people stay in the U.S. and work legally when war, disaster or other extraordinary conditions make return unsafe. Ukraine first received TPS in 2022 after Russia's full-scale invasion.
