US, Cuban envoys clash at UN during embargo debate
What's next: The General Assembly was set to vote Wednesday on a resolution urging an end to the decades-old US embargo.
A shouting match broke out at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday when US Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla confronted each other during the annual debate over the US embargo on Cuba. As Waltz criticized Cuba's government from the podium, Rodríguez Parrilla and other Cuban delegates interrupted from the floor. Rodríguez Parrilla then moved toward the front of the hall, prompting Waltz to demand that he step back. The Assembly president suspended the meeting, restored order and later allowed Cuba to raise a procedural objection. Rodríguez Parrilla accused Waltz of lying, while Waltz finished his remarks by urging member states to reject the resolution calling for an end to the embargo.
