US, China send aid to Venezuela after twin 7.2 and 7.5 quakes

Venezuela declared a national emergency as the confirmed death toll rose to 32 and is expected to climb further.

The United States, China and several other countries began sending aid to Venezuela after two major earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday night, measuring 7.2 and 7.5. According to USGS, the first quake was centered near San Felipe in Yaracuy State, followed about 39 seconds later by the second tremor. Venezuela's interim government declared a national emergency. The US deployed search-and-rescue teams, medical supplies and humanitarian assistance. China also said it was ready to help. Ecuador, El Salvador, Brasil, Republik Dominika, India and Spanyol also offered support. So far, 32 deaths have been reported, while the evacuation of victims trapped in rubble is continuing. The main Maiquetia airport was also closed because of damage.
