Unsoed sting case spurs review of student admissions system

Experts say the case adds to a string of corruption cases at state universities after a similar scandal at Unila.

The KPK's sting operation at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman has fueled calls to review higher education governance, especially the new student admissions mechanism. Education observer Indra Charismadji said the case at Unsoed is not the first at a state university, making systemic reform an urgent need. He also urged the public not to rush to label the case involving Unsoed Rector Akhmad Sodiq as political or purely criminal, while stressing the presumption of innocence. Earlier, on 21 August, the KPK named Akhmad Sodiq and five others suspects in an alleged corruption case tied to new student admissions. KPK acting director of investigations Achmad Taufik Husein said there were six suspects in total.
