UMY students detain a Polda DIY member on campus grounds
Polda DIY later said the man was an official escort for 470 students from Titik Nol and the incident ended after coordination.
A man suspected of being a plainclothes police intelligence officer was detained by students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta on campus on Wednesday night (17/6), shortly after the group returned from a demonstration at Titik Nol Kilometer, Yogyakarta City. Video of the detention circulated through the UMY Bergerak account and showed the man in a black T-shirt being questioned by students. Polda DIY later confirmed the man was one of its members assigned to security for a public expression of opinion. Polda DIY public relations chief Kombes Pol Ihsan said the presence of officers, both in uniform and in plainclothes, was intended to escort the demonstrators back to campus safely. Police said the misunderstanding was resolved humanely through communication with the rectorate and students.
