Ukrainian drones hit Tatarstan refinery, killing 12 in Nizhnekamsk
What's new: The strike wounded 39 people and hit Tatneft's TANECO plant, a major refining hub about 750 miles from Ukraine.
A Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region killed 12 people and wounded 39 on Monday, regional authorities said, in one of Kyiv's deepest strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Officials said industrial and civilian sites were hit in the city, including Tatneft's TANECO refinery, a major plant that processed 17 million tons of crude in 2024. Nizhnekamsk lies about 1,200 kilometers, or 750 miles, east of the Ukrainian border. Tatarstan leader Rustam Minnikhanov declared a mourning period. Ukraine has intensified long-range attacks on Russian oil facilities in recent months, aiming to disrupt fuel supplies and pressure Moscow as the war grinds on.
