Ukraine hit St. Petersburg in 1,015-drone attack across Russia
Why it matters: The barrage reignited strikes on Russia's oil sector, killed 1 person in St. Petersburg and left about 20,000 without power.
Ukraine launched one of its biggest long-range attacks of the war overnight, sending more than 1,000 drones toward Moscow, St. Petersburg and other targets across western Russia. Russia's Defense Ministry said it downed 1,015 drones over 15 regions, Crimea and the Black Sea. In St. Petersburg, drones struck an oil terminal, the Ruchyi oil depot, industrial warehouses, a data center and a logistics site linked to retailer Ozon, regional officials and local reports said. Gov. Alexander Beglov said one person was killed and five were injured. In nearby Yanino, strikes hit two transformer substations, cutting electricity to about 20,000 people. The attack also signaled Kyiv's return to hitting Russian energy infrastructure after a pause tied to a US-backed energy ceasefire that Ukraine says Moscow did not honor.
