EU and Germany back 236 million euro Surabaya-Sidoarjo rail project
Initial support covers modernization and electrification of the commuter line under the Global Gateway strategy.
Indonesia, the European Union, and Germany strengthened their sustainable transport partnership at the Indonesia-Europe Roundtable on Sustainable Transport Development in Jakarta on Wednesday. One project already under way is the Surabaya Regional Railway Line (SRRL), with first-phase financing of 236 million euro from KfW Development Bank to modernize and electrify the Surabaya-Sidoarjo commuter line. The forum, held alongside RailwayTech Indonesia 2026, also discussed multimodal transport integration, transit-oriented development, investment opportunities, and infrastructure financing. EU delegates and German representatives said the cooperation is aimed at strengthening connectivity, supporting economic growth, and building a lower-carbon transport system.
