Uber cuts 10% of customer service staff, links it to AI

It is Uber's second round of layoffs in less than two months, and some remote workers are being moved to regional hubs.

Uber is cutting 10% of jobs in its global customer service division, Community Operations, in a move it has for the first time publicly tied to efficiency gains from artificial intelligence. The company is also asking some employees who work remotely to relocate to hub offices, in line with its return-to-office policy. In an internal memo, Global Community Operations Vice President Megha Yethadka said the organization had become too complex and siloed, making it harder to expand AI use. This is Uber's second round of layoffs in less than two months, after the company cut 23% of its people division in June. While slowing hiring because of internal AI use, Uber still has more than 500 openings, including for engineers supporting robotaxi partnerships.
