U.S. rolls back some 50% tariffs on Canada before midterms

The exemptions cover plywood, some paper products, machinery and refrigeration equipment, while new tariffs hit carpets and certain valves.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump rolled back some 50% tariffs on several imports from Canada two weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The White House said the relief applies to plywood, some paper products, certain machinery and refrigeration equipment, effective Oct. 30. At the same time, Washington kept new tariffs on other goods, including carpets, certain valves and waste products. The move could help Senator Susan Collins in Maine, a border state hit by the U.S.-Canada trade war. Collins said she had lobbied for exemptions on goods important to blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed farmers in Maine. Ottawa said it was reviewing the latest policy while remaining ready to work constructively with the U.S.
