Typhoon Champi paralyzes Taiwan, 931 flights canceled

One person was killed, 94 were injured and more than 1,200 residents were evacuated as up to 90 cm of rain was forecast through Saturday.

Typhoon Champi paralyzed much of Taiwan on Friday (23/10), forcing schools and workplaces to close in many areas and leading to the cancellation of 931 flights. Taiwan's transport ministry said 262 domestic flights and 669 international flights were canceled, while north-south high-speed rail services continued to operate. So far, the storm has killed one person and injured 94, with more than 1,200 residents evacuated from vulnerable areas, including mountain regions. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said Champi brought gusts of up to 191 kilometers per hour near its center and could dump nearly one meter of rain in northern areas. The storm is expected to pass off Taiwan's northeast coast before moving toward southern China and Japan.
