Typhoon Bavi hits eastern China after 1.7 million evacuations

What's new: China suspended schools and transport, canceled hundreds of flights and set aside 40 million yuan for relief.

Typhoon Bavi made landfall in eastern China late Saturday, striking Zhejiang province after authorities evacuated more than 1.7 million people and issued high-level storm and rain alerts. The storm first came ashore near Taizhou, also reported as Yuhuan, before moving inland and weakening, but forecasters warned its broad rain bands could still dump exceptionally heavy rain on Zhejiang and neighboring Fujian. Schools, work and outdoor activities were suspended in parts of Zhejiang, while hundreds of flights, ferry links and some rail services were canceled. Shanghai also moved about 34,000 residents from high-risk areas. Before reaching China, Bavi brought strong winds and rain to Japan's southern islands and Taiwan. In the Philippines, landslides and flooding intensified by the storm killed at least 17 people.
