Turkey jails former minister in probe tied to stock selloff

What's new: Prosecutors accused Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya of using undisclosed market-moving information before September's fund crisis.

A Turkish court jailed former family minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya as part of an investigation into the investment fund crisis that rattled the country's stock market in September. Anadolu said an Istanbul court ordered her held on charges of violating capital markets law and belonging to a criminal organization after questioning by a money-laundering crimes bureau working with the chief prosecutor's office. Prosecutors alleged Kaya held nonpublic information that could affect a capital market instrument's price and had contacts with former asset-manager executive Emre Tezmen. Her husband, Ilyas Kaya, was released with a travel ban. The probe follows allegations the couple made large gains from share sales before the market turmoil.
