Turkey detains 209 in Ankara raids before July NATO summit

Why it matters: The sweep came with a 13-day ban on protests and included a journalist, lawyers and activists, drawing rights backlash.

Turkish authorities detained 209 people in anti-terror raids in Ankara on June 23, less than two weeks before a July 7-8 NATO summit in the capital that is expected to include President Donald Trump. Prosecutors issued warrants for 241 suspects tied to Islamic State and outlawed far-left groups including DHKP-C, MLKP and TKP/ML, and said efforts to find the remaining suspects were continuing. Rights groups and opposition figures said those detained included Kaos GL editor Yildiz Tar, three lawyers, leftist politicians, an academic and a union official. The crackdown followed Ankara's move to ban demonstrations, press conferences and other gatherings from June 28 to July 10 on security grounds.
