Trump waives beef tariffs for 300,000 metric tons over 3 months
Why it matters: The move aims to cut ground beef prices as the US cattle herd sits at its lowest level since the 1950s.
President Donald Trump moved to let up to 300,000 metric tons of beef trimmings for ground beef enter the United States over the next three months without out-of-quota tariffs. The White House said Trump will sign an executive order within two weeks. Trump wrote that the imported beef would be sold at 25% below current market prices, but he did not identify the foreign exporters or companies making that commitment. The decision drew pushback from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and Republican Sens. Tim Sheehy of Montana and Deb Fischer of Nebraska, who argued cheaper imports could undercut ranchers and slow efforts to rebuild the domestic herd.
