President Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on the European Union and ordered a Section 301 trade investigation after Brussels fined Google €890 million under the bloc’s Digital Markets Act. The European Commission split the penalty into a €460 million fine over Google’s treatment of shopping, hotel, transport and sports results in search, and a €430 million fine tied to Play Store rules that limited developers from steering users to cheaper offers outside the app store. Trump said the EU would pay a “very big price” and demanded the penalties be reversed. The dispute adds new strain to US-EU trade relations a day after Trump rolled out fresh tariffs on dozens of trading partners.
