Trump taps Todd Blanche for attorney general after DOJ fund uproar

What's next: Blanche faces a tight Senate vote after backlash over a shelved $1.8 billion Justice Department fund.

President Donald Trump on Monday nominated Todd Blanche to serve as U.S. attorney general after more than two months in the job on an acting basis. The move puts Trump’s former personal defense lawyer before a narrowly divided Senate, where some Republicans have already criticized Blanche’s role in a now-abandoned Justice Department plan to create a $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund. Blanche also signed off on a settlement tied to Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS that shields Trump, his family and the Trump Organization from some tax-related enforcement tied to returns filed before that deal. Blanche took over after Trump fired Pam Bondi in April.
