Trump presses Zelensky to strike deal with Russia on Ukraine war
What's new: Trump warned that failing to reach an agreement would be "a very bad thing" as ties with Kyiv frayed again.
President Donald Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach a deal with Russia, escalating pressure on Kyiv as the war grinds on. Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said the United States had given Ukraine extensive support and gotten back only "grief, death" and financial costs. He added that if Zelensky does not make an agreement, "I think it's going to be a very bad thing." The remarks came amid another downturn in relations between Trump and Zelensky. Trump also argued that Europe is tiring of the conflict, even as European governments have tried to compensate for any reduction in U.S. aid and supplies to Ukraine.
