Trump press secretary draws rebuke after China 'toilets' remark

What's new: Beijing responded by inviting Katie Zacharia to visit again, while scrutiny over her legal credentials continued.

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia came under fresh criticism after saying China did not have "proper toilets" in an interview that aired Oct. 15, days into her tenure as President Donald Trump's top spokesperson. Zacharia, who previously lived in China and worked at Zhong Lun in Beijing, made the comment while recalling views in 2016 that China was poised to overtake the United States. On Oct. 16, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning answered by inviting her to visit China more often. The episode added to pressure on Zacharia, who has already faced questions about her first briefing and about describing herself as a lawyer despite acknowledging she did not pass the California bar exam.
