Trump pauses parts of new Russia sanctions law for 60 days
What's new: The hold blunts tariffs targeting top buyers of Russian oil and gas and drew bipartisan criticism in Washington.
President Donald Trump suspended parts of a new US sanctions law against Russia two days before the measures were due to take effect, ordering a 60-day pause that the administration said would allow time to study the impact on the US and global economy. The law, signed in September after passage by Congress, authorizes tariffs of up to 100% on imports from the five biggest purchasers of Russian oil and gas and also targets senior Russian figures, financial institutions and the shadow fleet used to dodge embargoes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the move as a setback to pressure on Moscow as Russian strikes hit 15 Ukrainian energy facilities overnight. The decision also triggered criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans, including Ted Cruz, John Cornyn and Thom Tillis.
