Trump calls US$80 billion Iran war cost worth it
Pentagon is reported to be seeking extra funding from Congress, while operational funds could run low this summer.
President of the United States Donald Trump said the roughly US$80 billion cost of a conflict with Iran was still cheap compared with the outcome he said prevented Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He made the comment to PBS News when asked about reports on the war funding needs. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the Pentagon asked Congress to add US$80 billion to cover Iran-related operations and other expenses. Pentagon leaders also warned that military operating funds could start to run out this summer if a new defense budget bill is not approved. The Pentagon budget for fiscal 2026 is currently about US$1 trillion. The conflict followed United States and Israel strikes on targets in Iran on 28 February, before Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum ending the conflict on 18 June.
