President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods on Monday, targeting imports tied to disputes over autos, alcohol and dairy. The White House used Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a power that has gone largely unused for decades, to issue three proclamations covering separate product groups. Administration officials said the duties take effect in 30 days. The measures exclude energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals, but they reach some goods that had previously been protected under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Ottawa to answer “tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar,” signaling the move could deepen the trade fight between the two countries.
