Trump halts Iran strikes, ties Hormuz reopening to peace deal

What's next: Trump said a signing could come within days, while Tehran has not yet given a formal response.

President Donald Trump said June 11 that the United States halted planned new strikes on Iran after what he described as final points of an initial peace deal were approved, and he tied the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to a formal signing. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said the agreement would ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon and could be signed within days, possibly over the weekend in Europe. He said he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and leaders in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait, and would soon talk with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported Tehran was likely to approve the deal, but no formal Iranian response had been issued.
