President Donald Trump broadened a voluntary pledge aimed at keeping data center electricity costs off household utility bills, adding governors, utilities and developers as AI-driven power demand becomes a political flashpoint. At an event Thursday at EPA headquarters in Washington, the White House said nearly 200 additional stakeholders joined the pact, bringing its reach to 80% of power delivered to U.S. households and businesses. Trump first signed the pledge in March with companies including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, OpenAI, xAI and Oracle. The push comes as voters worry that data centers could drive up competition for electricity, water and land, even as the administration argues the AI buildout is critical to staying ahead of China.
