Trump backs Infantino as FIFA revolt spreads over World Cup plan
What's new: Trump intervened as UEFA, AFC and Concacaf pressed for an independent review and weighed next steps before FIFA's March election.
President Donald Trump publicly backed FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Tuesday as pressure mounted over a failed plan to spin off part of the men’s World Cup business to private investors. Trump wrote on Truth Social that removing Infantino would be a “terrible mistake,” calling the 2026 World Cup the most successful ever. The intervention came after UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf accused Infantino of deception over FIFA Forward Enterprise, a proposed company that would have managed commercial and ticketing rights for FIFA competitions while selling roughly a one-fifth stake to investors. Infantino has apologized and dropped the proposal, but the confederations are pushing for an independent review and weighing how to handle next year’s FIFA presidential race.
