Trump asks Supreme Court to keep $400 million ballroom work going

What's next: Work must stop Aug. 21 unless the justices freeze a lower-court injunction while the administration appeals.

President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to let construction continue on a $400 million White House ballroom after a federal appeals court ordered the project halted without congressional approval. The administration's emergency filing seeks to pause an injunction set to take effect Aug. 21. Government lawyers said the project is about 65% complete and argued the East Wing replacement includes security and military features, including secure event space and other protective facilities. The National Trust for Historic Preservation sued after the administration demolished the East Wing last year and began building without the review and approval process the group says federal law requires.
