Troy Jackson wins over 90% of delegate slots in Maine Senate race

Why it matters: Jackson is now positioned to claim the Democratic nomination and challenge Susan Collins in a key Senate contest.

Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson dominated the first round of delegate selection in the race to become Democrats’ Senate nominee in Maine, winning more than 90% of the 319 slots allocated Saturday. His allies swept all 149 delegate spots in Cumberland County, the state’s most populous county and home to Portland. The accelerated contest opened after Graham Platner exited the race, with county delegate selection running over two days ahead of next weekend’s nominating convention. Jackson, a former Republican and fifth-generation logger, is running on a progressive platform that includes higher taxes on billionaires, Medicare-for-all, abolishing ICE and opposition to U.S. military aid to Israel.
