Dolphin typhoon injures 6 in Japan as China shuts ports

The storm is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang-Fujian Sunday night into Monday, with rainfall potentially topping 600 mm.

Typhoon Dolphin hit Okinawa, southern Japan, on Saturday (8/8), injuring at least six people and cutting power to tens of thousands of buildings in Okinawa and Kagoshima. Authorities said five elderly people in Okinawa and one resident in Kagoshima were hurt by strong winds. The storm brought sustained winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 216 kilometers per hour, and forced ANA and Japan Airlines to cancel flights to and from Okinawa. In China, authorities closed ports, suspended ferry services and activated level III emergency response ahead of a landing expected between Zhoushan, Zhejiang, and Fuding, Fujian. Taiwan also canceled 78 international flights.
