Thunderstorm delays second half of France-Iraq in Philadelphia

Update: The World Cup 2026 match was delayed about 90 minutes, with France leading 1-0 on a Kylian Mbappe goal.

The second half of the Group I World Cup 2026 match between France and Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was delayed by a thunderstorm and heavy rain on Monday local time. Spectators were told to take shelter, while entry to the stadium had earlier been held up because of severe weather in the area. After the first half ended, an initial 15-minute delay was announced, but conditions did not improve and the restart was pushed back about 90 minutes. The match eventually resumed once conditions were considered safer. When play stopped, France led 1-0 on a long-range shot by Kylian Mbappe. It was the first weather disruption to delay a match during World Cup 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
