Three orangutans moved to Gunung Palung amid dry season
The Ketapang animals were cleared as healthy and released back into the wild after traveling by road and river.
The Ministry of Forestry moved three Bornean orangutans from Tanjung Pura village, Muara Pawan district, Ketapang regency, West Kalimantan, to reduce the risk that the peak dry season would affect their habitat. A joint team from BKSDA Kalimantan Barat, Gunung Palung National Park, and Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia evacuated the female mother Mamak Yuni, her male infant Pura, and the juvenile female Yuni on Aug. 21. Movement of the animals toward nearby homes and plantations was attributed to natural conditions in the habitat corridor. After veterinary checks by YIARI and a clean bill of health, the three were released at night in Gunung Palung National Park, Batu Barat sector. BKSDA Kalbar also followed up on the discovery of another orangutan in a resident's plantation in Kayong Utara.
