Thai court adds 2 years, 8 months to Arnon Nampa’s jail term
What’s new: The latest lese majeste conviction pushes the protest leader’s cumulative sentence to more than 34 years.
A court in Bangkok sentenced Thai activist and human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa to another two years and eight months under the country’s lese majeste law, extending his total jail time to more than 34 years. Thai Lawyers for Human Rights and Arnon’s lawyer, Krisadang Nutcharut, said the new case stemmed from a 2020 protest outside Siam Commercial Bank headquarters. Arnon, 42, became a prominent figure in the youth-led demonstrations that challenged Thailand’s military-drafted constitution and called for scrutiny of the monarchy. He has been jailed since 2023 on multiple convictions tied to speeches and social media posts. BBC reported this was one of 14 lese majeste cases brought against him, with verdicts still pending in two more.
