Tesla on Autopilot plows into Texas home, killing 76-year-old woman
What's new: Investigators said the driver showed no signs of intoxication as they examine why the Model 3 left the road.
A Tesla Model 3 operating with an automated driver-assistance system crashed into a house in Katy, Texas, on June 19, killing 76-year-old Martha Avila, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. Investigators said driver Michael Butler, 44, failed to stay in a single lane, left the roadway and slammed into the brick home on Blooming Park Lane at high speed around 8 p.m. Avila was in the front room when the car burst through the wall and struck her. She was flown to a hospital and later died. Authorities said Butler showed no signs of intoxication and was cooperating. Sergeant Alex Turman said investigators were still trying to determine why the car failed to control its speed before the crash.
